While January is usually a slow month for me, there is no shortage of projects to be done. Right now I'm working on a henna-cake tutorial for a magazine. I have less than 2 weeks to complete and photograph three different mehndi-inspired "Bollywood" cakes, answer interview questions, and draw templates. While some things can only be learned the old-fashioned way, through lots of practice, I hope the tutorial will help put some basic mehndi designs into the hands of cake decorators world-wide. Cakes are a joy to do because, unlike henna, there are so many colors to choose from! The more the merrier! And with a Bollywood style cake, one never has to worry about it being too busy or blingy. More is definitely more! This is my first cake for the tutorial. While it looks complex, I started out with just a simple paisley "leaf" scattered all over the gold lustre fondant. I added a couple of little details inside the paisley, and the added the "fireworks" motif in between the paisleys. It was looking a little unfinished with just the two motifs, and most things are more pleasing to the eye in odd numbers so I finished the cake with simple swirls in the remaining spaces. A paisley ribbon border, and voila!
Stay tuned for an update on when the tutorial will be ready!
